Organizations of all kinds are increasingly concerned with controlling the impacts of their products and services on the environment. The ISO 14001 standard is primarily concerned with "environmental management". This means what the organization does to:
  1. minimize harmful effects on the environment caused by its activities, and to
  2. achieve continual improvement of its environmental performance.
The ISO 14000 covers many aspects of environmental management.  The standard gives practical methods for companies looking to identify and manage the environmental impact of their organization.  In addition, it provides tools to help improve their environmental performance.

ISO 14001:2004 and ISO 14004:2004 focus on environmental management systems. The other standards within the 14000 set are focus on specific environmental aspects such as auditing, life cycle analysis and communication.

This standard is intended to provide organizations with the elements of an effective environmental management system that can be integrated with other management requirements and help an organization achieve environmental and economic goals.
