AS9100:2016 Update

turbo jet engine as9100 registrarThis is a short summary of a December 2015 SAE/IAQG website slide presentation highlighting points in the soon to be released AS9100:2016 standard.

A timeline presented discusses a Semaphore meeting in April of 2016 which could include the release of the standard. It is expected AS9100 will declare a 3 year implementation plan.

The revised AS9100 standard will call for a high level structure based on ISO 9001:2015 (10 sections), an emphasis on the process approach, risk based thinking, and change management. Additionally, the revised standard will address product safety, counterfeit part prevention, configuration management, awareness and human factors.

Some of the other important points include:

4.4 - ISO 9001 doesn't require a quality manual, but AS9100 will require some items to be maintained as documented information.

5.3 - AS9100 requires a management representative as a point of contact; ISO 9001 deleted this requirement in the 2015 revision.

7.5.3. - AS9100 will now require organizations to define how documented information that is electronic is protected.

8.4.2 - Several clauses were added to external processes (purchasing) to include the testing of important raw materials and test reporting.

8.7 - AS9100 is requiring a procedure for handling nonconforming material.

9.3 - On time delivery has been added as an input and is now part of management review.
At the end of the presentation, there are several smaller segments addressing key subjects. These include risk-based thinking, process approach, concept of change,, product safety, prevention of counterfeit parts, human factors, and quality management principles. These short sections are full of good ideas and usually list the mandatory sections as a reference point to the actual requirements.
