Hands And TreeLatest word from the International Organization for Standardization is a revised ISO 14001 is expected to be released in October 2015. Currently, experts are pulling together comments from the latest draft and preparing a final draft that will move to the approval stage set for May 2015.

Periodically international standards are reviewed in an effort to pick up on current trends and ensure compatibility with other management system standards. 2004 was the last time ISO 14001 was revised.

Some of the planned changes for ISO 14001 include increasing the role that EMS plays in an organization's strategic planning process. Also, pushing lifecycle thinking as it relates to environmental aspects and requiring the improvement of environmental performance.

Transitioning to the 2015 revisions of ISO 14001 is three years from the publication date.
