audit risk QMSWhen you select a Registrar, they will ask you to sign a contract.  Your audit will either be a Surveillance or a Registration Audit.

The Registration Audit determines if you receive a certification; whether your Management System meets the standard.  When you are approved, your certificate is good for three years.

Once a year or twice per year, you may be required to have a Surveillance Audit performed.  This is a "quick check" to see if you are conforming to the standard.

What is a Surveillance Audit?

The purpose of the surveillance visits is for the certification body to find out if your Management System is working.  The audit focuses on things the certification audit was not ready to test.
  • Are incidents recorded
  • Are all the measurements made
  • Are corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) poperly recorded and implemented
  • Does the top management support the Management System
A surveillance audit may also review issues identified as an area of improvement or possibly minor nonconformities.

The point is, during the surveillance visit the certification auditor will focus on whether your system works.
