7-year turnaround: How Dematic bounced back from layoffs to $1B in annual sales

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — The conveyor belts that move products at Amazon, the world's largest online retailer, are Grand Rapids products.

Amazon is just one of many companies that use supply chain equipment made by Dematic North America, the largest division of the Luxembourg-based company Dematic Group.

If a company has a large distribution center, chances are good the system that moves its products came from Dematic. It’s a global supplier of logistics systems for factories, warehouses and distribution centers.

Its Michigan customers are some of the state’s largest employers: Meijer, Amway, Art Van, SpartanNash, Michigan State University, Grand Valley State University. Dematic also makes cranes used by GM, Chrysler and Ford, although the auto manufacturers account for only a small portion of Dematic's business.
