ISO 17021: What it Means for You?

Written by ASR Quality Editor on . Posted in ASR Quality & Standards Blog

ISO 17021 is the document which contains the requirements for Registrars. This document was released in 2006 with a one year transition period for Registrars.

So what does this mean to you as a client of ASR?
  • The audit cycle times have changed. ASR must conduct all audits within 12 months from the date of last recertification or registration audit. If your certificate expires during the year, ASR must have the audit conducted and registration committee  review done prior to certificate expiration date. This means your audits need to take place at least 30 days in advance of the certificate expiring to ensure continuing certification.
  • There now must be revisions on the certificates so if there are changes to your scope or address etc. it is clear that revisions have been made to the certificate.
  • There is now a Stage 1 and Stage 2 for ISO 9001:2000. The new requirement is to go on site to review a clients system in context of their business. We currently do this for ISO 14001 environmental audits and TS 16949 automotive audits. The  documentation audit is now conducted on site at the Stage 1. For ASR clients that were quoted after March 1, 2008, we have  been quoting 2 stages. For all current clients the need for a Stage 1 audit at the time of re-certification is determined by your audit history.
  • ASR is required to have publicly accessible documents. ASR will be placing the appeals procedure & complaint procedure for client accessibility as well as additional documents contained within your customer support manual on our website.

If you have any questions regarding these changes, please contact the office.
