ASR will be busy in the next few months bringing staff and auditors current with the new requirements of ISO 9001 and sharing with clients a timeline for registering to the 2015 version of ISO 9001.

Staff members are preparing an on-line presentation to help clients understand the 2015 expectations and training needs. ASR will notify clients through the ASR web site and newsletter when the presentation is available.

Organizations do not have to wait for the official release to begin working on some of the major changes in the standard including context of the organization, risk, leadership, and greater focus on the process approach. Below is a quick highlight of several major changes to the ISO 9001.

Effective January 1, 2016 ASR Clients using ASR’s logo and the ANAB logo on their respective stationery, marketing materials, and electronic media/websites will need to replace the ANAB logo. This change must be completed by December 31, 2017. Use of the ANAB logo and the ASR logo is optional.

ANAB MS CB 2C 225pxANAB (ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board) provides accreditation services for three different brands and through the years has resulted in logo confusion. ANAB says adopting one logo should correct the issues.

ASR will start using the new ANAB logo on all new and re-certification certificates dated September 1, 2015 and later for all our clients with ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 13485, AS9100, and AS9120 certifications.

An electronic copy of ANAB’s logo will accompany the new certificate with instructions on the appropriate use of the logo in an organization’s marketing material. As part of future surveillance audits, auditors will review a client’s marketing material/website to ensure proper use of the logo.

If an organization decides to use ANAB’s and ASR’s logos, both symbols must appear together on marketing material/websites. The ANAB logo must be placed next to ASR’s logo and must be smaller than ASR’s logo.

Neither logo can be used on any product or used in such a way as to suggest ASR and/or ANAB have certified or approved any product, process, or service of a certified organization.

Something to Think About

Risk Based Thinking
New for ISO 9001

By: Rand E. Winters

plan do act cycle NLIn advance of the 2015 release of ISO 9001 it is important to revisit one of the major changes to the standard – developing risk based thinking.

ISO 9001:2015 moves risk based thinking from a "should" or a good idea to enhance a QMS to a "shall" requirement. Both ISO 13485:2003 and AS9100 require users to address risk in Section 7 of their respective standards.

A good way to look at risk and to address risk is by utilizing the PDCA cycle - Plan, Do, Check and Act.

Transferring Your Certification

Transferring your Certification to ASR is easy.
ASR regularly receives requests from organizations seeking to transfer their registration certificates because customer service and satisfaction is lacking.

ASR's transfer process is simple:

Step 1 – Send us some basic information about your organization (you can use the ASR website or email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) or better yet, pick up the phone (888-891-9002) and talk immediately to either Dave Gawlak or Tom Droog and they will help with the completion of the information needed.

Step 2 - Expect to receive a prompt quotation within a few hours.

Step 3 - Once the quotation is approved by your organization, your ASR sales rep will contact you to discuss an audit time line based on your next surveillance audit or your recertification audit that would normally have been conducted by your current registrar.

Step 4 – When the audit date is set, Dave or Tom will ask you to send your transfer documentation to ASR. This would include previous audit reports and current certificate.

Step 5 - ASR auditor(s) conduct the audit and issue to the client any non-conformances for corrective action response.

Step 6 –Lead auditor issues to ASR's registration committee for review the audit report and associated documents together with the client's corrective action responses

Step 7 - Following the committee review and approval, ASR issues a new certificate to the client. This step usually takes a few days.

Step 8 – An organization's certification is then posted to a public registration database.

Maintaining compliance to a standard is only part of the audit process. ASR provides feedback to help organizations grow and develop, by identifying what is effective, where improvement is needed, and where additional opportunities exist to improve how the organization works.

Throughout the entire audit process and afterwards, ASR is always easy to reach and available to answer questions.

Two types of documented information (ISO 9001:2015 4.4.2) are required. Organizations will have to maintain documented information (procedures and work instructions) and they will have to retain documented (records) information.

Maintaining documented information is NOT defined in the standard but left to an organization to determine the number of procedures that may be necessary. Retained documented information is clearly defined and is nearly identical to what is written in the 2008 version of ISO 9001.

Staff Highlight:

cynthia-redick-90Today's ASR newsletter features ASR's Audit Processing Manager - Cynthia Redick.

Cynthia is a native of Grand Rapids Michigan, and studied interior design at Kendall College of Art and Design. She spent 18 years in the business insurance industry as a customer service representative before joining ASR in February 2009.

Audit documentation from every ASR audit conducted (USA and foreign offices) funnels to Cynthia for input into ASR's electronic database. She distributes the audit packages to reviewers, and then issues a certificate to the client when the package is approved by the reviewer.

Cynthia realizes job satisfaction when client information is accurate in the ASR database. But, the real "high" comes when she sends new clients a certificate after all their hard work to develop and implement their quality system. Her joy is reinforced whenever clients successfully complete a surveillance audit and she sends ASR's letter of continued conformance.

She and husband Darryl have 4 nieces and 3 nephews and a ton of kids they work with through the children's program at their church. They are dog people, but at the moment do not have any pets.

Cynthia's "not-so-secret" ambition is to be an Amazing Race participant, but while she waits for the casting call, she relaxes each day with a book.

ASR periodically receives questions regarding use of the ISO logo (ISO + globe design) as it pertains to accurately reflecting the logo in an organization's marketing material. To find the official position on using the ISO logo, ASR went directly to the International Organization for Standardization.
