Heads Up ISO 9001 Clients

on .

Effective July 15, 2017, ASR clients will not be able to recertify to the 2008 version of  ISO 9001 or the 2004 version of ISO 14001 because of the impending transition date.

September 15, 2018 is the deadline set by ANAB (accreditation body) for ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 organizations to transition to the 2015 version of these two standards.    This means the transition audit must be completed including return/approval of NCs and a new 2015 certificate issued.

ASR clients are encouraged to transition to ISO 9001:2015 and/or ISO 14001:2015 at their recertification audit if possible. Clients that transition at recertification will not incur additional audit time. Clients may elect to transition at a surveillance audit or at a special audit at any time during the audit cycle. However, additional audit time may be required to cover the review of changes to the client’s quality management system. The additional time is dependent on the size of the organization.

If your organization has not scheduled its transition to the 2015 version of ISO 9001 or ISO 14001, please contact ASR today!
ASR is available to answer questions regarding the transition process or interpretations of these revised standards.

Addressing Competency - ISO 9001:2015

on .

Online quality courses at work or at homeCompetency as described in the 2015 revised ISO 9001 standard changed slightly from the 2008 version.

In 2008, training addressed product conformity. The 2015 revision relabeled training as competency with the focus aimed at Quality Management System effectiveness.

Standard writers combined two sub clauses (6.2.2b and c) from the 2008 standard resulting in competency being reflected in Section 7.2c of the 2015 revision.

A note has been added to clarify applicable actions. These actions might include training, mentoring, changing a person's job who is currently employed or hiring a competent employee or contractor. Remember, this is a note. Each organization might have other methods that are as valid as those mentioned in the Section 7.2 note.

It is important to retain documented information (records) as evidence of competency. Records could be two parts - skill sets for a job and a record of the individual obtaining the required skills. It is possible to have one record form listing skills needed and a sign off block when competency has been demonstrated to the trainer or supervisor.

Using FMEA to Reduce Risk

on .

FMEA (Failure Modes Effects Analysis) can be a successful risk reduction tool to assist in meeting the risk planning (design and manufacturing process) requirements mandated by ISO 9001:2015.

As an analytical tool, ISO 9001 organizations can use the FMEA to review steps in a process to determine how much risk there is in each specific process step. This documented criteria score (1 – 10) identifies, among other issues, how often the failure occurs and can the issue be detected prior to the product leaving the facility? A completed FMEA highlights the greatest risks requiring an action plan for process improvement to mitigate the risk.

ISO 9001:2015 Internal Auditing for the Context of the Organization

on .

Process Management ConceptIdeas for ISO 9001:2015 Internal Auditing

As ISO 9001 organizations adjust their systems to meet 2015 requirements, it opens an opportunity to add two new processes to the internal auditing requirements to capture effective implementation.

Audit program managers might want to consider Context of the Organization and Strategic Direction as separate audits inside of the organization’s audit program.  Adding these topics to the internal audit process based format requires inputs/outputs to these processes as well as measurement activities to demonstrate effective implementation.

Internal auditors should begin with top management.  Auditors should be looking for available documented information that determines what the Strategic Direction is.   This would cover many of the segments of the Context of the Organization that have been established.  Some of the segments include internal and external issues, and the organization’s interested parties.

How to find an ISO 9001 Registrar

on .

ISO certified golden labelThe final step in your quest for registration is the third party audit by a Certification Body (CB) or registrar.

where do you find a registrar?

How do you choose the right ISO 9001 registrar?

Your ISO registrar becomes a business partner.  Because the CB looks in depth at your operation, they will fundamentally understand your business.  Their goal is to help assess your adherence to the ISO 9001 standard and provide opportunites for improvement.  They will document where you conform and where you do not.  Their efforts will help your operation; and only a business partner takes this view.

What are the main changes to the standard?

The new version has a, higher level structure making it easier to use along side and with other management system standards.  The new version also addresses risk in more detail.
